Set up a readable GPS speedometer: units, signal, and HUD

ClearSpeed GPS shows speed from your device's location data. It is useful when you want a large, simple display, but GPS quality depends on reception and the device. Set up the app before moving and keep attention on your surroundings.

Choose the right speed unit

Select MPH, KM/H, or knots for the activity you are planning. Allow the location access the app needs and check the signal status before relying on the display. Compare the selected unit with any other instrument you are using so you do not mistake a unit difference for a speed error.

Try the mirrored HUD display while stationary

Enable the HUD mirror mode and check the reflection in the intended position while parked. Adjust the day or night display for readability. Visibility varies with glass, lighting, mounting position, and device brightness. Use a safe mount and keep the display out of your view of the road.

Record a trip and review History

Tap Start before you set off, Pause for stops you don't want counted, and End Trip when you arrive. The summary (date, start and end time, duration, distance, average and max speed) is saved on the device under Settings, History. ClearSpeed measures only while it is open on screen, and GPS interruptions pause the totals, so treat them as app estimates rather than certified measurements. Battery Saver is available when power use matters.

The speed number should be the largest thing on screen, with good contrast in daylight and a darker mode at night. Banner ads near the number defeat the purpose.

2. Does it admit when GPS is weak?

Why a dedicated speedometer instead of a map app

Navigation apps can show speed, but it is a small badge beside a map. When you only want a clear number — on a boat, a bike, in a car whose speedometer is hard to read, or in a rental that shows the "wrong" unit — a full-screen readout is easier to glance at. ClearSpeed opens straight to that readout, with no map, account screen, or ads in the way.

Honest about signal

If the iPhone reports location accuracy worse than about 30 meters (roughly 100 feet), ClearSpeed shows

Honest limits for runners

How each one measures

A car speedometer infers speed from wheel or transmission rotation, so tire size, wear, and pressure shift it. A GPS speedometer infers speed from satellite positioning, independent of the tires, but dependent on signal quality.

Why the dashboard often reads higher

Vehicle regulations in many markets allow speedometers to over-read but not under-read, so manufacturers typically calibrate them a little high. Worn or non-standard tires change the reading further.

Why GPS can be off

Weak signal, tunnels, urban canyons, and sudden acceleration can make GPS lag or wander for a moment. ClearSpeed shows

What a GPS speedometer does

It estimates how fast your device is moving from satellite positioning and shows that number. It needs no map data and works anywhere with a GPS signal — roads, water, trails.

What a speed-limit feature does

It looks up the posted limit for the road you're on from map data, which varies by coverage and can be out of date around construction or new signage. Navigation apps such as Waze and Google Maps show limits where available and can warn when you exceed them; Apple Maps can show the posted limit during driving directions.

How a phone HUD works

A phone lying flat on the dashboard reflects in the windshield like a dim mirror. Because reflections reverse the image, the app flips the display horizontally so the numbers read the right way round. It is the same idea as dedicated HUD gadgets, using the screen you already have.

Your iPhone reports speed alongside each location fix. A GPS speedometer displays that estimate — so its quality depends on the signal the phone is getting.

Where the number comes from

iOS combines satellite signals (GPS and other GNSS systems) with other sensors to produce location updates, each with an estimated speed and a horizontal accuracy. ClearSpeed reads those updates while it's open, converts the speed to your unit, and displays it.

What affects accuracy

Sky view.

Tall buildings, dense trees, bridges, and tunnels block or reflect signals.

Placement.

A phone deep in a bag, a footwell, or under a metallic windshield tint sees less sky.

Low speed.

At walking pace, small position errors are a big fraction of the movement, so readings wander more.

Just after launch.

The first fix can take a few seconds, longer without cellular data.

Device.

Wi-Fi-only iPads have no GPS receiver and usually cannot report speed on the move.

How ClearSpeed handles weak signal

If reported accuracy is worse than about 30 m (≈100 ft), or a reading is stale, the app shows Weak GPS instead of a speed number.

Displayed speed is smoothed ("Balanced") so it doesn't flicker, and jumps are limited to what's physically plausible.

Trip distance ignores implausible position jumps, and trip time pauses while the signal is unusable.

How accurate is it?

With a clear sky and steady movement, phone GPS speed is typically close to true speed — often closer than a car's dashboard, which is usually calibrated to read slightly high. We don't publish a precision figure because it depends on your device and conditions. Treat the number as an informational estimate, not a certified measurement.

A speedometer doesn't need servers, cloud accounts, or content updates to keep working. Location is processed on the device, so there is no ongoing cost to pass on as a subscription and no reason to sell ad space next to the speed number.

How a trip works

What History saves

For each ended trip: date, start and end time, duration, distance, average speed, and max speed. Summaries are stored on the device and shown in your current unit. Clear everything from Settings → History → Clear History (this can't be undone).

What it doesn't save

No route maps, GPS tracks, or raw location samples

No cloud sync or account

No export (CSV/GPX) and no business/personal trip tagging

If you need a mileage log for taxes or reimbursement, a dedicated mileage-tracking app with exports is the better fit.

Accuracy notes

Measurement runs only while the app is open on screen. When GPS is weak or the app is in the background, trip time and distance pause instead of guessing, so totals can read slightly short in tunnels or if you switch apps.

HUD mirror mode flips the speed display so it reflects correctly in glass. Set it up before you move, and use it only if the reflection is easy to read without looking away from the road.

Set it up while parked

Keep screen awake

on (it is on by default) so the display doesn't lock mid-trip. ClearSpeed only measures while it is open on screen.

Start a trip if you want the stats recorded.

Lay the phone flat on a non-slip mat or in a dashboard mount, top of the screen toward you, below your line of sight.

Check the reflection from the driver's seat. If it's doubled, faint, or distracting, switch back to

Normal

and use a regular mount instead.

Before you drive

Do not adjust the app or the phone while moving. Pull over first.

Keep the phone clear of airbags, vents, and your view of the road.

Follow local laws about phone placement and use while driving.

Screens and batteries get hot in direct sun on a dashboard; remove the phone if iOS shows a temperature warning.

Brightness

At night, the default HUD brightness is usually enough. Very bright screens can create glare on the glass. Adjust iPhone brightness before you set off.

Battery

HUD mode keeps the screen on and GPS running. For long drives, connect power. Battery Saver (Settings → Battery) lowers GPS precision and dims non-essential UI to reduce drain.

Not a certified instrument

ClearSpeed is an informational display. Your vehicle's speedometer and posted signs remain the reference.

If speed-limit warnings are the reason you want a speedometer, use a navigation app — ClearSpeed doesn’t know posted limits. Both are free and work with CarPlay, which ClearSpeed does not.

Driving safely

Set units, mode, and brightness while parked. Mount the phone securely where it does not block your view and where local law allows, then leave it alone while the vehicle is moving. ClearSpeed is an informational display; your vehicle's speedometer and posted signs remain the reference.

Information ClearSpeed GPS uses

ClearSpeed GPS uses your device location while the app is open to calculate your speed, trip distance, elapsed time, average speed, and maximum speed. This location data is processed on your device. The app does not use background location.

Information stored on your device

ClearSpeed stores your settings and, when you end a trip, a trip summary: start and end time, duration, distance, average speed, and maximum speed. Summaries are stored locally on your device. They do not include route maps or raw location samples. You can delete all saved summaries in Settings → History → Clear History, or by deleting the app. Like other app data, this information may be included in your own device backups under your control.

Information we collect

We do not collect, transmit, store, sell, or share personal information from ClearSpeed GPS. Your location and trip history are not uploaded to our servers or anyone else’s.

No advertising SDKs are included.

Data retention

Updated September 7, 2026. This section applies to the marketing website. If you choose “Allow analytics,” we load Google Analytics to measure website visits and App Store link clicks. Google receives page paths, referring website names, campaign labels, browser and device information, and network information needed to receive the request. Analytics cookies may be stored in your browser. We disable advertising signals and personalization.

Google Analytics is not loaded before you opt in. “No thanks” keeps it off. Use “Website analytics choices” in the footer to change your choice. We respect Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control. This website measurement does not access app content, photographs, GPS coordinates, or trip history. App Store link clicks do not tell us whether you installed or purchased the app.
