GPS speed for running and walking: when a speedometer helps

ClearSpeed shows speed in MPH or KM/H, not pace per mile or kilometer. For a treadmill check, a stroller walk, or skating, that can be enough. For most runs, a running app is the better tool.

Where it's useful

  • Checking your real outdoor speed at a steady effort
  • Walking, stroller pushing, skating, scooters, or other activities where speed is the number you care about
  • Seeing max speed from a sprint or a downhill

Speed to pace

Pace = 60 ÷ speed. 6 mph = 10:00 per mile; 7.5 mph = 8:00 per mile; 12 km/h = 5:00 per km.

Honest limits for runners

  • Screen must stay on. The app measures only while it's open on screen, so it doesn't work with the phone locked in a pocket.
  • No pace display, splits, audio cues, heart rate, or Apple Health/Watch.
  • Low speeds are noisier. At jogging pace, GPS error is a larger share of the movement.

If you want pace, splits, and background tracking with the phone locked, use Apple's Workout app, a dedicated running app, or a GPS watch. ClearSpeed is built primarily for vehicles, boats, and bikes.
