Using iPhone as a bike speedometer

Mount your iPhone on the bars and ClearSpeed becomes a large, sensor-free speedometer with trip distance, average, and max speed.

What works well

  • Readable at a glance. The speed number is large in portrait and landscape.
  • No sensors to pair. Speed comes from GPS, so there's no wheel magnet or Bluetooth setup.
  • Trip totals. Start a ride, pause at a café, resume, then End Trip to save a summary: distance, time, average, and max speed.
  • Light or night appearance, plus Battery Saver for longer rides.

Know the limits

  • Screen must stay on. ClearSpeed measures only while it's open on screen. Keep-screen-awake is on by default; locking the phone pauses measurement.
  • Battery. Screen plus GPS drains faster than a dedicated bike computer. Battery Saver helps; a top-tube battery pack helps more on long rides.
  • No cadence, power, heart rate, elevation, route map, or Strava/Health export. For training analysis, a cycling app or bike computer is the better tool.
  • Trees and cliffs can weaken GPS; the app shows Weak GPS rather than guessing.

Setup tips

  • Use a secure stem or handlebar mount; check it before descents.
  • Choose MPH or KM/H before you ride and start the trip while stopped.
  • Don't tap the screen while riding in traffic — glance only.
