Where ClearSpeed is the better fit
- You want no ads and no tracking without paying a subscription. Of the apps above, only ClearSpeed, Speedometer 55, and Speedometer One show “Data Not Collected.”
- You want a HUD mirror mode and on-device trip history in one purchase, with nothing to unlock.
- You use an iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular) and want a layout designed for it.
- You want the app to refuse to guess when GPS is weak.
Where another app is the better fit
- Speed-limit alerts: Speedometer 55 (free presets), GPS Speedometer Speed Tracker, and Speedometer» Pro offer alerts; ClearSpeed has none. For posted limits from map data, see Waze and Google Maps.
- Apple Watch or Live Activities: Speedometer» and Speedometer One support Apple Watch; Speedometer» shows a Live Activity on the Lock Screen.
- Background tracking, route maps, or exports: Speedometer 55 Pro, Speedometer» Pro, and GPS Speedometer Speed Tracker cover these. ClearSpeed only measures while open on screen and stores summaries, not routes.
- Dash-cam recording: Speedometer 55 includes video with a speed overlay.
- Free to try: Every other app here is free to download. If you’re unsure you’ll use a speedometer, start with a free one.
What about DigiHUD and Android apps?
DigiHUD Speedometer is an Android app; its developer says an iOS version was only ever “hoped” for and that Google removed the apps from the Play Store in February 2025, so it is now distributed from the developer’s own site (DigiHUD FAQ, DigiHUD blog). There is no DigiHUD app on the iPhone App Store. On iPhone, ClearSpeed’s HUD mode, Speedometer 55, Speedometer», and GPS Speedometer Speed Tracker cover the same windshield-reflection idea.
How we checked
On September 25, 2026 we read each app’s U.S. App Store listing (price, In-App Purchases list, “Contains ads” note, and App Privacy section) and Apple’s public lookup API. Privacy labels are self-reported by developers. We did not install or test competitor apps, so extras are as each developer describes them. Speedometer One’s ad status is from its description. If a detail here is out of date, tell us on X and we’ll correct it.
